There are many ice fishing shelters to choose from. Finding the best shelter that suits your needs isn't as hard as you might think. Having the right shelter will make your hobby fun and enjoyable with a little extra comfort. In this article I will share with you what essential things to look for.
The first thing you will want to consider is the type of material your hut will be made of. Many ice fishing shelters are created from nylon, poly cotton, and canvas. All of the materials it can be made from will have its pros and cons. The most ideal materials will be thick, strong, fire and water resistant. The thicker the material is the more heat you will retain and the more protection you will gain from the elements. When it comes to transporting your shelter the thinner material the lighter the load. The best thing to do is find one that will be light enough for you to transport but still maintain strong qualities to protect you from the weather.
Ice fishing shelters can usually hold 1-5 people. Depending on how many people you plan on taking your trips with will be your answer to what kind of size shack your looking to get. If you are a solo fisherman I recommend getting a two person shelter. Having the extra space will make it so you can fit in your enclosure with your gear comfortably. Also height should be a concern. Bumping your head when you move will get old real fast.
Privacy is another issue you should decide on. Its best to have at least one window in your shack. This will be a great source of light to you. Also having a window will give you the advantage of being able to keep a eye on the weather. You will want to be able to see if a storm is brewing in your area. Plus you can catch the person sneaking up on you that is trying to steal all your fish!
If you like to bring a portable heater with you then ventilation should be a concern. Having fumes in your hut without being ventilated may lead to a deadly mistake. Make sure you keep the door open when running one without vents. This will allow the good air in and the deadly air out.
