"Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat, please put a penny in the old man's hat... "Remember that nursery rhyme from your childhoold? I sure do.Christmas is a time for giving. To the poor, as well as to our own families.
Infrequently we lose sight of that.The commercial exploitation of Christmas over the past 20 years or so has turned Xmas into a present-giving madness, particularly if you have kids. And if you don't, the Christmas period is probably going to are composed of lots of parties around the Christmas tree, frequently with Kris Kringle type Christmas present giving, and regularly far too much alcohol.
Xmas stockings and Christmas decorations are too frequently overtaken by over-indulgence in Christmas Food, and the ever present Christmas eggnog and other alcohol - heaps of it.
Is this a good thing? Well, I suspect it depends to some extent on your point of view of what Xmas practices are all about. Those among us who hook on to any excuse for a booze-up, the Christmas party period must be amazing. Hang up 1 or 2 Christmas ornaments in the office or the social club or wherever, and have a boozy Christmas party - it could be your best chance to start an office love.
But I suspect many people have become moderately jaded by the way Xmas is used as an excuse for Christmas parties beginning in November and running right thru December to Xmas Eve. Get togethers with your workmates is not such an awful thing, of course - it's pleasant to socialise once in a while rather than being focused on work. But it is the over-indulgence which many people find moderately over the top.
Plenty of our youngsters don't have any notion of the true meaning of Christmas. To several, Xmas trees and Xmas ornaments mean Santa and Christmas gifts - lots and lots of them. Even those kids who can tell you what Christmas is all about are apt to forget the real meaning of Xmas when deluged with Christmas gifts.
Whatever occurred to the real spirit of Christmas, when people would cook two normal Christmas dinners - one for their own family, and one which they would take out and give to a less fortunate family who perhaps lived just down the road?
Whatever occurred to the real spirit of Xmas, when youngsters would fastidiously select and wrap up their loved but still in good condition Xmas gifts from last year, and take them to the local children's hospital, and really hand the Xmas present to a sick child just to see the smile on their faces?
Nowadays people are much more likely to give money to diverse charities ( which is not such a bad thing ) than do acts of service, or essentially give hand picked gifts of food or toys. But money is so very much more impersonal.
So how about trying to make a difference this Xmas? Get out and give something personal - to someone you can look in the eye when you're giving the Christmas food or Xmas present - and say from the heart - "Merry Christmas".
