Works Of Kindness Throughout The Holiday Season
"Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat, please put a penny in the old man's hat... "Remember that nursery rhyme from your childhoold? I sure do.Christmas is a time for giving. To the poor, as well as to our own families.
Often we lose sight of that. The commercial exploitation of Yuletide over the past 20 years or so has turned Christmas into a present-giving fever, especially if you've got youngsters. And if you do not, the Yuletide period is likely to are composed of lots of parties round the Yuletide tree, frequently with Kris Kringle type Yuletide present giving, and frequently far too much alcohol.
Xmas stockings and Yuletide decorations are too frequently overtaken by over-indulgence in Yuletide food, and the ever present Yuletide eggnog and other alcohol - plenty of it.
Is this a good thing? Well, I suspect it depends to some degree on your perspective of what Xmas practices are all about. Those among us who latch on to any excuse for a booze-up, the Yuletide party period must be wonderful. Hang up one or two Christmas ornaments in the workplace or the social club or wherever, and have a boozy Yuletide party - it could be your best chance to start an office romance.
But I believe many of us have become slightly jaded by the way Xmas is used as an excuse for Christmas parties starting in Nov and running right through December to Xmas Eve. Get togethers with your workmates is not a bad thing, of course - it's nice to socialise once in a while rather than being focused on work. But it's the over-indulgence which many people find slightly OTT.
Lots of our children don't have any notion of the real meaning of Yuletide. To many, Christmas trees and Xmas ornaments mean Chris Cringle and Yuletide gifts - lots and a lot of them. Even those youngsters who can tell you what Yuletide is all about are inclined to forget the actual meaning of Xmas when deluged with Christmas gifts.
Whatever happened to the actual spirit of Christmas, when folks would cook 2 traditional Yuletide dinners - one for their own family, and one which they would take out and give to a less lucky family who maybe lived just down the road?
Whatever happened to the real spirit of Xmas, when children would carefully select and wrap up their loved but still in good condition Xmas gifts from last year, and take them to the local children's surgery, and really hand the Xmas present to a sick child just to see the smile on their faces?
Nowadays folks are much more likely to give money to varied charities ( which is not such a bad thing ) than do acts of service, or actually give hand picked gifts of food or toys. But money is much more impersonal.
So how about trying to make a contribution this Christmas? Get out and give something personal - to somebody you can look in the eye when you are giving the Yuletide food or Christmas present - and say from within - "Merry Christmas".
