The first card

The card was commissioned by Sir Henry Cole who asked his friend John Calcott Horsley to design and print one for him. Cole sent the design to personal and business acquaintances to bid them a Merry Christmas. The card caused a certain amount of uproar in that is depicted a family enjoying Christmas together, with a small child taking a drink from a glass of wine. There were perhaps ulterior motives for Cole’s introduction of Christmas Cards, who had three year earlier helped to introduce the Penny Post.
