"Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat, please put a penny in the old man's hat... "Remember that child's rhyme from your childhoold? I sure do.Christmas is a time for giving. To the poor, as well as to our own families.
Often we lose sight of that.The commercialisation of Christmas during the last twenty years or so has turned Christmas into a present-giving madness, particularly if you have youngsters. And if you do not, the Christmas period is probably going to are comprised of tons of parties round the Christmas tree, regularly with Kris Kringle type Christmas gift giving, and often way too much alcohol.
Xmas stockings and Christmas decorations are too frequently overtaken by over-indulgence in Christmas Food, and the ever-present Christmas eggnog and other alcohol - heaps of it.
Is this a nice thing? Well, I guess it depends to a point on your perspective of what Xmas practices are all about. Those among us who hook on to any excuse for a booze-up, the Christmas party period must be wonderful. Hang up 1 or 2 Xmas ornaments in the office or the social club or wherever, and have a boozy Christmas party - it may be your best chance to start an office romance.
But I suspect many people have become somewhat jaded BTW Xmas is utilized as an excuse for Xmas parties starting in November and running right thru December to Christmas Eve. Get togethers with your workmates is not such a terrible thing, naturally - it's good to socialize once in a while rather than being focussed on work. But it is the over-indulgence which many of us find somewhat OTT.
Lots of our kids don't have any notion of the true meaning of Christmas. To many, Xmas trees and Christmas ornaments mean Santa and Christmas gifts - lots and lots of them. Even those youngsters who can tell you what Christmas is all about are apt to forget the actual meaning of Xmas when deluged with Xmas gifts.
Whatever occurred to the actual spirit of Xmas, when people would cook 2 standard Christmas dinners - one for their own family, and one which they might take out and give to a less fortunate family who maybe lived just down the road?
Whatever occurred to the actual spirit of Xmas, when kids would scrupulously select and wrap up their loved but still in good condition Xmas gifts from last year, and take them to the local children's surgery, and essentially hand the Xmas gift to a sick kid just to see the smile on their faces?
Nowadays people are more likely to give money to diverse charities ( which is not such a bad thing ) than do acts of service, or actually give hand picked gifts of food or toys. But money is much more impersonal.
So how about trying to make a contribution this Christmas? Get out and give something personal - to someone you can look in the eye when you are giving the Christmas food or Xmas gift - and say from deep inside - "Merry Christmas".
