Examining The HistoryTradition Of Giving Christmas Cards

The average person that sends Christmas cards will send approximately 50, which equates to billions being sent worldwide each year. The tradition is one that has gone from strength to strength and the earning potential for card makers in the few weeks before Christmas is huge. Here we look at the tradition of giving Christmas cards, from its inception to modern day options.

Origins

Although it is possible that some homemade cards were sent prior to 1843, this year saw the sending of the first commercial card. The card was commissioned by Sir Henry Cole who asked his friend John Calcott Horsley to design and print one for him. The design was sent by Cole to numerous friends and professional acquaintances to wish them a ‘Merry Christmas’. The card caused a certain amount of uproar in that is depicted a family enjoying Christmas together, with a small child taking a drink from a glass of wine. There were perhaps ulterior motives for Cole’s introduction of Christmas Cards, who had three year earlier helped to introduce the Penny Post.

A change in designs

It is a common misconception today that early Christmas cards focussed on religious themes. However, they frequently entailed more fanciful designs such as flowers and animals to represent the fact that spring was just around the corner. Religious themes and more wintery scenes did soon become popular in addition to Christmas cards becoming popular in America thanks to the printer Louis Prang.

Contemporary ideas

Modern day christmas cards are now available in many different shapes and sizes, with comedy cards proving a big hit. Another area that is enjoying real growth is that of personalised Christmas cards. This way you are able to create your card design online and then easily place your order. Personalised cards provide a great way to add a bit of fun to the process of sending cards, whilst providing a keepsake to friends and family.
