Santa Did Well This Year
The main thing that our kid wanted for the holidays this year was a motion gaming system. Unfortunately it was up to me to decide what kind of platform to put under the tree. This was not going to be easy for me to decide so as not to disappoint. But I was determined to find the perfect system to fill the first part of that wish list.
In the store, it seemed like I was overloaded with choices that include the xbox 360 kinect, the Nintendo Wii, or the Playstation move, or I could opt or a handheld system like the PSP, or the Nintendo DS, or we could get a smartphone that has all sorts of application that a person can enjoy so in the end the choice was not going to be as simple as I thought and I would have to find a way to break it down.
The first section I went to look at was the smartphones. Because of the age of my child, I was afraid that a phone was the wrong thing. I was afraid about how fragile they could be. There was also the monthly cost that was associated with a cell phone. A basic subscription for phone service was not going to cut it. Although they might be fun, there were limitations to playing on a small screen of a cell phone. I came to the conclusion that this option would not give my son what he would need.
Next I went over to the full sized gaming platforms and with the recent xbox 360 kinect release date, there were basically three fro me to choose form and they all had different advantages and disadvantages to them according to the salesman, and in order to decide what was best it would be a matter of the age of the user, the types of games that they like to play and how experienced a gamer they are. For the best family experience, the Wii has been well tested for quite a while. People who are into video games have turned to the kinect system. Xbox lets people connect to others through the internet. The PS 3 is well known for its high definition picture. There were plenty of titles available for all of the platforms.
It was important to think about the budget as I shopped. The cost also was dependent on what kind of accessories I wanted for the games. It did not seem to matter which platform I bought when it came to buying games. If I wanted to be able to go online there was an extra cost associated with that for some of the platforms. This was another cost that would need to be factored into my decision. My mind started to go into overload so I decided to look at the hand held games.
These also had a wide variety of games for them. As long as the batteries were charged a kid could be playing games even when they were traveling. They also did not have to be connected to the internet for them to work although there were systems that could do this. This portability was both a positive and a negative for me to consider. I did not want to depend on a young child to take on the responsibility of keeping something that expensive safe in strange environments.
In the end, we decided on the Xbox. It is hard to say what made us come to this choice. I think we kind of flipped a coin to decide. My son could not have been happier. Since he opened the present, he has been playing constantly. I guess we made a good choice.
