Christmas $16.95 Written for everyone who loves and is simultaneously driven crazy by the holiday season, Christmas: A Candid History provides an enlightening, entertaining perspective on how the annual Yuletide celebration got to be what it is today. Works Of Kindness Throughout Christmas
"Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat, please put a penny in the old man's hat... "Remember that child's rhyme from your childhoold? I sure do.Christmas is a time for giving. To the poor, as well as to our own families.
Sometimes we lose sight of that. The commercialization of Xmas over the last twenty years or so has turned Yuletide into a present-giving frenzy, particularly if you have kids. And if you don't, the Xmas period is likely to consist of a lot of parties around the Xmas tree, often with Kris Kringle type Xmas gift giving, and regularly way too much alcohol.
Yuletide stockings and Xmas decorations are too often overtaken by indulgence in Xmas food, and the ever present Xmas eggnog and other alcohol - lots of it.
Is this a nice thing? Well, I suspect it depends to some degree on your perspective of what Yuletide customs are all about. Those among us who hook on to any excuse for a booze-up, the Xmas party period must be amazing. Hang up a few Yuletide ornaments in the workplace or the social club or wherever, and have a boozy Xmas party - it could be your most likely chance to start an office romance.
But I suspect many of us have become moderately jaded incidentally Yuletide is used as an excuse for Yuletide parties starting in Nov and running right through December to Xmas Eve. Get togethers with your workmates is not a bad thing, of course - it's pleasant to socialize once in a while rather than being focused on work. But it is the over-indulgence which many folks find somewhat OTT.
Plenty of our children do not have any idea of the real meaning of Xmas. To many, Yuletide trees and Xmas ornaments mean Santa Claus and Xmas gifts - lots and lots of them. Even those kids who can tell you what Xmas is all about are apt to forget the actual meaning of Yuletide when deluged with Yuletide gifts.
Whatever happened to the actual spirit of Yuletide, when folk would cook 2 normal Xmas dinners - one for their own family, and one which they might take out and give to a less lucky family who maybe lived just down the road?
Whatever happened to the real spirit of Yuletide, when children would carefully select and wrap up their loved but still in good condition Yuletide gifts from last year, and take them to the local children's hospital, and essentially hand the Yuletide gift to a sick kid simply to see the grin on their faces?
These days folk are much more likely to give cash to varied charities ( which is not such an awful thing ) than do acts of service, or really give specially selected gifts of food or toys. But money is much more impersonal.
So how about making an attempt to make a change this Yuletide? Get out and give something personal - to someone you can look in the eye when you are giving the Xmas food or Yuletide gift - and say from deep inside - "Merry Christmas".
