The Custom Of Giving Christmas Cards And Their Evolution Throughout Time

The practice of giving Christmas cards see the average person sending 50 each, which adds up to billions throughout the world. The tradition is one that has gone from strength to strength and the earning potential for card makers in the few weeks before Christmas is huge. Read on for an overview of how the tradition of giving Christmas cards has developed since its inception.

Origins

Whilst there may have been a few people practicing the giving of handmade Christmas cards prior to; 1843 saw the first commercial one being sent. The card was made for Sir Henry Cole by his printer friend John Calcott Horsley. Cole sent the design to personal and business acquaintances to bid them a Merry Christmas. The design of the card was somewhat controversial in that part of it depicted a small child attempting to drink from a wine glass. There were perhaps ulterior motives for Cole’s introduction of Christmas Cards, who had three year earlier helped to introduce the Penny Post.

Different tastes

It is a common misconception today that early Christmas cards focussed on religious themes. In fact the vast majority of cards involved themes that were meant to remind people that spring was on its way. The introduction of religious themes and winter scenery soon followed as the idea of Christmas cards spread into America thanks to printer Louis Prang.

Modern day alternatives

More contemporary christmas cards provide a wider choice with humorous options proving extremely popular. Another area that is enjoying real growth is that of personalised Christmas cards. This approach allows the sender to create their own card design through online tools, before ordering. You can have some real fun personalising your cards and the outcome is one that can be kept by your loved ones for years to come.
