Why Do We Need To Celebrate Xmas
The Bible never commands us to celebrate Christmas or observe any other holiday allegedly borrowed from traditional Pagans. Can we then, as followers of Jesus Christ luxuriate in an increasingly commercialised and temporal Holiday?It is true that many Pagan Vacations took place in the month of December. Most all the nations surrounding the Mediterranean Sea held holidays celebrating the Winter Solstice. The Winter Solstice according to the Julian calendar was December 25th.
It is indeed fact that by choosing December 25th, the Church selected a date where worship of false deities was performed. What's often misstated or wholly ignored is the Churches desire in choosing this date. The Church by selecting the solstice was able to set up a festival to rival the Pagan holidays, that has almost completely eradicated the parties to these false Gods. The bible never directly states that we are to mark the birth of our Lord.
In contrast to the Ten Commandments which are explicit, A few individuals believe their is an implicit directive to celebrate Jesus birth. These are some evidence of the Angels ' reaction to the arrival of the Christ in Luke ; All of a sudden a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests." Luke 2:13-14 NIV The Angelic Host, after having informed the watchful shepherds of the incarnation of the Savior and how to recognize Him broke into a song of praise and blessing.
The Sheppard's react in pretty much the same manner after seeing the Christ kid as Luke records ; The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the stuff they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told. All one wants do is look around them, from TV and radio, to magazines and store front advertisements, we are snowed under with sales spiels. We are told that we must have the most recent and greatest thing.
This type of party of Yuletide would be idolatrous. Our party of Xmas should take on the approach of the Angels and shepherds. As Christians our party must be one of amazement, wonder, thankfulness and joy. Our party is to be a steady daily party of one of the best moments in redeeming history. Till He comes again we should celebrated His first incarnation in a way suggest by an unknown song writer in around the 11th or 12th century.
