Put Yourself in the Holiday Mood By Using Christmas Courtesy Gifts
Soon after the Thanksgiving Holiday people shift into high gear for the Christmas Holidays. Even as turkey leftovers remain in your fridge you’re likely to start getting Christmas greeting cards in your mailbox.
I remember as a child doing the Christmas cards one night each December. For my family, that night became a tradition. My mother would gather us all around the crackling fireplace and give us each a stack of cards, some crayons, and hot chocolate.
Not knowing who many cards were being sent to didn’t slow my zeal, through my coloring, to wish them the best of holidays, including my hope they received everything requested on their Christmas list. I didn‘t stop coloring a card until, without missing a beat of drinking my hot chocolate, it was covered with reindeer, Christmas trees, presents, Christmas lights, and Santa Claus himself.
I would often wonder how far away some of the places we were sending the cards to were and if Santa would get to our house or theirs first. Regardless of need, my father regularly had a fire burning. I remember feeling waves of heat when he would stab the firewood in the fireplace to stir it up a bit.
As I saw it, when the family worked together to make Christmas cards was the true beginning of Christmas. At that time of year, I realized the good tidings of Christmas could be threatened if I didn‘t tow the line. Basics like toothbrushing and timely trips to bed with no complaint had to be adhered to. Santa Claus was checking my every move.
The older I got, the less I participated in the card-making process. I’d regularly stop and visit with the family working in the living room, then continue to my room to do homework or talk with friends.
But, now that I’m a father with young daughters I gather them around one night every December and hand them a stack of Christmas greeting cards and a box of crayons. I do it every year now, while I can, because I know one day they are going to pass and head to their room instead.
