Get in the Celebratory Mood With Christmas Greeting Cards

Soon after the Thanksgiving Holiday people shift into high gear for the Christmas Holidays. Even as turkey leftovers remain in your fridge you’re likely to start getting Christmas greeting cards in your mailbox.

I remember as a child doing the Christmas cards one night each December. That night was special, and became like a tradition for my family. With my mother guiding traffic, we’d gather around the fireplace and drink hot chocolate while working with a stack of cards and some crayons.

Although I rarely knew the person or persons the cards were being sent to, I worked diligently with my crayons to wish everyone a merry Christmas and convey my hope they received everything on their Christmas list. I didn‘t stop coloring a card until, without missing a beat of drinking my hot chocolate, it was covered with reindeer, Christmas trees, presents, Christmas lights, and Santa Claus himself.

My concerns as a child included how distant the homes we were sending cards to might be, and whose house Santa would arrive at first. Regardless of need, my father regularly had a fire burning. Funny, but I still can feel the heat he‘d make when adding firewood into the fireplace.

As a child, I didn‘t believe the Christmas season had arrived until we gathered as a family and made Christmas cards. It served as a symbol for me that I had better listen and be good. I had better brush my teeth and get to bed on time. Santa was watching.

As I began to advance in years, my participation in the card-making process I so valued as a child began to wane and I‘d stop by and chat with the family, then retreat to my room to do homework or talk to friends.

But, now that I’m a father with young daughters I gather them around one night every December and hand them a stack of Christmas greeting cards and a box of crayons. I do it every year now, while I can, because I know one day they are going to pass and head to their room instead.
