There are two major veins of thought considering the Christmas holidays. The secular approach focusing on Santa Claus, Christmas trees, and gifts is popular in the U.S..
The other component consists of each individual person’s religious faith. Many people celebrate the holidays for deeper, spiritual reasons and share those themes through the sending and receiving of religious Christmas cards.
Potential content sources for Christian Christmas cards:
- A nativity scene depicting baby Jesus in a manger
- Shepherds
- A Bible verse
Church and spiritual leaders alike have argued for years against what they interpret to be the secularization of Christmas. Their arguments regularly focus on the fact that nonbelievers, governments, and businesses often usurp the true meaning of the holiday by, instead, promoting elements of commercialism.
The Christmas holidays, at least in the U.S., were set aside to celebrate the birth of Jesus. In lieu of knowing an exact date for the birth of Christ, the Roman Catholic Church declared it to be December 25. Many historical experts believe church authorities chose this date because it corresponds with the winter solstice, already a popular Roman holiday that could be assimilated into Roman culture with little fanfare.
Protestant historians often fault the Roman Catholic Church for this, sometimes calling it the “paganization” of the birth event. Church debates in regards to secularization have been ongoing for hundreds of years, and might not go away soon.
The Christian faith has no corner on the market for key holidays set near December. One example is Hanukkah, an eight-day Jewish holiday that is celebrated on different days each December.
Most of these cards annually depict the major events surrounding the birth of Jesus Christ, and come under the title of religious Christmas cards. Whether picked from the Gospels or elsewhere in the Holy Book, Biblical verses commonly are inserted into messages within such cards.
