Acts Of Kindness During The Holiday Season
"Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat, please put a penny in the old man's hat... "Remember that children's rhyme from your childhoold? I sure do.Christmas is a time for giving. To the poor, as well as to our own families.
Often we lose touch with that.The commercial exploitation of Christmas during the last 20 years or so has turned Xmas into a present-giving madness, especially if you have children. And if you do not, the Christmas period is likely to consist of a lot of parties round the Christmas tree, frequently with Kris Kringle type Christmas present giving, and often far too much alcohol.
Christmas stockings and Christmas decorations are too often overtaken by overindulgence in Christmas Food, and the ubiquitous Christmas eggnog and other alcohol - heaps of it.
Is this a nice thing? Well, I suspect it depends to a point on your point of view of what Christmas practices are all about. Those among us who fasten on to any excuse for a booze-up, the Christmas party period must be amazing. Hang up a few Xmas ornaments in the office or the social club or wherever, and have a boozy Christmas party - it could be your surest chance to start an office love.
But I believe many people became slightly jaded BTW Christmas is used as an excuse for Xmas parties starting in November and running right through December to Yuletide Eve. Get togethers with your workmates is not a bad thing, naturally - it's pleasant to socialize once in a while rather than being focused on work. But it's the excessiveness which many folks find moderately ott.
Many of our children do not have any notion of the true meaning of Christmas. To many, Xmas trees and Yuletide ornaments mean Santa and Christmas gifts - lots and masses of them. Even those children who can tell you what Christmas is all about are likely to forget the actual meaning of Christmas when deluged with Xmas gifts.
Whatever happened to the actual spirit of Xmas, when folk would cook two traditional Christmas dinners - one for their own family, and one which they'd take out and give to a less lucky family who maybe lived just down the road?
Whatever happened to the real spirit of Christmas, when children would scrupulously select and wrap up their loved but still in good condition Christmas gifts from last year, and take them to the local children's hospice, and really hand the Christmas present to a sick kid solely to see the smile on their faces?
These days folk are more likely to give money to diverse charities ( which is not such a bad thing ) than do acts of service, or actually give handpicked gifts of food or toys. But money is much more impersonal.
So what about trying to make a difference this Xmas? Get out and give something personal - to someone you can look in the eye when you're giving the Christmas food or Xmas present - and say from the heart - "Merry Christmas".
