Remain in Union With True To Life Merry Christmas Cards, Not E-mail

Remember that line in the old song “I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas,” written by Irving Berlin?

“I’m dreaming of a white Christmas,
With every Christmas card I write”

When Irving Berlin first started singing “I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas” in 1954, e-mail did not exist. Now, it seems that many people in today’s rushed world would rather sit down at the computer and type out an e-mail with a Christmas wish on it instead of taking the time to write out a thoughtful message in true Merry Christmas cards.

Merry Christmas Cards

Two different communication systems

  • cards take more time to draft
  • cards will be kept and e-mails erased
  • As a whole

But, believe it or not, people still love receiving real live holiday cards through the mail. The growing trend to send out e-cards for Christmas is directly proportional to the satisfaction one realizes when they open a traditional card that came in the mail. Few people argue with the concept that receiving traditional Christmas cards is preferable to receiving e-cards sent for the same purpose.

A real, live Christmas card shows that you thought of the person specifically. Picking out a card takes time, and that simple act will be appreciated. If you write a message and sign your name to the card, that carries even more meaning to the recipient. Even though the cost of the card and postage combined won’t exceed more than a couple dollars, the idea that you spent the money says something positive to the recipient. A real card can be felt, seen, and displayed in the home, plus shown to others. That can’t be said of an e-mail.

I think the holidays lend themselves to being more personal and intimate by sending real Merry Christmas cards. E-mail provides great advantages for quick communication in business and life. Yet, wanting to deliver a message as quickly as possible seems slightly contrary to the Christmas holiday we’ve come to relish and enjoy. Even now, wouldn’t it be absurd to end Irving’s famous phrase “with every Christmas card I write” with a reference to an e-mail?

Doesn’t quite have the same ring, does it?
