Discussing The HistoryTradition Of Giving Christmas Cards
The average person that sends Christmas cards will send approximately 50, which equates to billions being sent worldwide each year. The tradition has become ever more popular and the few weeks before Christmas represent a great opportunity for card makers to increase their profits. Here we look at the tradition of giving Christmas cards, from its inception to modern day options.
The first card
Although it is possible that some homemade cards were sent prior to 1843, this year saw the sending of the first commercial card. The card was commissioned by Sir Henry Cole who asked his friend John Calcott Horsley to design and print one for him. The card was sent by Cole to people that he knew in both his personal and business life to wish them a Merry Christmas. One area of the family scene depicted showed a young child drinking from a glass of wine; an inclusion that caused some controversy. Cole had helped to introduce the Penny Post three years previously and the invention of Christmas cards proved a shrewd move.
A change in designs
It is incorrectly assumed today that early Christmas cards all centred on religious designs. In fact the vast majority of cards involved themes that were meant to remind people that spring was on its way. Themes involving winter scenes and religion did soon followed as America was introduced to the Christmas card thanks to printer Louis Prang.
Modern day alternatives
More contemporary christmas cards provide a wider choice with humorous options proving extremely popular.
