Works Of Kindness During The Holiday Season
"Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat, please put a penny in the old man's hat... "Remember that nursery rhyme from your childhoold? I sure do.Christmas is a time for giving. To the poor, as well as to our own families.
Infrequently we become confused about that. The commercialization of Christmas during the last 20 years or so has turned Christmas into a present-giving madness, particularly if you have kids. And if you do not, the Christmas period is probably going to are comprised of a lot of parties around the Christmas tree, frequently with Kris Kringle type Christmas gift giving, and often far too much alcohol.
Christmas stockings and Christmas decorations are too often overtaken by over-indulgence in Christmas Food, and the ubiquitous Christmas eggnog and other alcohol - heaps of it.
Is this a nice thing? Well, I guess it depends to some extent on your perspective of what Christmas practices are all about. Those of us who hook on to any excuse for a booze-up, the Christmas party period must be excellent. Hang up a few Yuletide ornaments in the office or the social club or wherever, and have a boozy Christmas party - it may be your best chance to start an office love.
But I believe many people have become somewhat jaded by the way Christmas is used as an excuse for Yuletide parties beginning in Nov and running right thru December to Yuletide Eve. Get togethers with your workmates is not such a terrible thing, naturally - it's nice to socialise once in a while rather than being focused on work. But it's the overindulgence which many folks find moderately OTT.
Plenty of our children do not have any notion of the actual meaning of Christmas. To many, Xmas trees and Yuletide ornaments mean Santa Claus and Christmas gifts - lots and lots of them. Even those kids who can tell you what Christmas is all about are inclined to forget the actual meaning of Christmas when deluged with Yuletide gifts.
Whatever happened to the actual spirit of Yuletide, when folks would cook two traditional Christmas dinners - one for their own family, and one which they might take out and give to a less lucky family who perhaps lived just down the road?
Whatever happened to the true spirit of Christmas, when children would scrupulously select and wrap up their loved but still in good condition Christmas gifts from last year, and take them to the local children's surgery, and really hand the Christmas gift to a sick kid solely to see the smile on their faces?
Nowadays folks are much more likely to give money to diverse charities ( which is not such a bad thing ) than do acts of service, or actually give handpicked gifts of food or toys. But money is so very much more impersonal.
So how about making an attempt to make a contribution this Christmas? Get out and give something personal - to someone you can look in the eye when you're giving the Christmas food or Xmas gift - and say from within - "Merry Christmas".
