Stay in Union With Real Merry Yule Cards, Not E-mail

Wasn’t the physical writing of Christmas cards a major piece of Irving Berlin’s song “I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas?

“I’m dreaming of a white Christmas,
With every Christmas card I write”

E-mail came along many years after Irving Berlin began singing the popular song “I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas. Now, it seems that many people in today’s rushed world would rather sit down at the computer and type out an e-mail with a Christmas wish on it instead of taking the time to write out a thoughtful message in true Merry Christmas cards.

Merry Christmas Cards

Cards vs. e-mail

  • Cards cost more than e-mail
  • cards take more time to draft
  • As a whole

There’s a sentimental difference between receiving Christmas cards online or at the mailbox. E-mail seems to have put a dent in the total number of cards people are sent each year, so this makes each card one receives by mail more special. There is something special about traditional Christmas that the electronic era may never replace.

The warmth you can convey in a real Christmas card will far exceed anything sent through the computer. It shows that you took the time and effort to select a card for them. If you write a message and sign your name to the card, that carries even more meaning to the recipient. Even though the cost of the card and postage combined won’t exceed more than a couple dollars, the idea that you spent the money says something positive to the recipient. Once you send your card to another, they may place it in a prominent place in their home for others to see. E-mails, on the other hand, rarely go beyond one’s computer screen.

I think the holidays lend themselves to being more personal and intimate by sending real Merry Christmas cards. If you have any desire to commute posthaste, e-mail far exceeds the normal mail system. Yet, wanting to deliver a message as quickly as possible seems slightly contrary to the Christmas holiday we’ve come to relish and enjoy. Can you imagine ol’ Irving singing, “I’m dreaming of a White Christmas, with every e-mail I type out and send”?

Doesn’t quite have the same ring, does it?
