Ideas On Creating Remembrances For Your Family This Holiday Season
One of my favourite Xmas songs is the one with the line that describes Christmas as being 'the most wonderful time of the year'. While everyone is looking forward to the receiving and giving of Yuletide gifts there are many more activities that make Xmas wonderful and notable. In this piece I'll share some of my favourite Xmas activities ; perhaps you can adopt a few of them for your own family.
Choosing a Yuletide Tree
The Christmas Tree is a focal point in our home at Yuletide and is the most apparent display in the festive season. For many families the quest for a Yuletide Tree begins with a family trip to a tree farm on the day following Thanksgiving. In our place the memories begin with us hauling the great box containing our synthetic tree out of the attic and attempting to remember how it all fits together!
Once the tree is assembled the real fun starts ; decorating it with gorgeous Xmas ornaments. Our entire family takes a part in decorating the tree ; put some Xmas tunes on the stereo and have a sing-a-long while you decorate. Naturally plenty of our ornaments are bought from the store but we also like to make our own homemade Yuletide decorations. Plenty of love goes into each ornament and as we empty them each year they bring back plenty of satisfied memories about Christmases past. While decorations may change from year to year the home made ones always have a special place on our tree.
Baking cookies and other goodies
Another one of our noteworthy activities is cookie baking. We make gingerbread cookies and use Christmas-shaped cookie cutters to give them a festive feel. Baking cookies is an activity all the family can enjoy. Older children can help with the baking while the more youthful ones can have some fun sprinkling sugar on the completed cookies, or decorating them with topping. Just be sure to have the camera prepared for some great fun packed Xmas shots.
Making goodie baskets
If you set aside an entire day for baking you'll be stunned at the quantity of Christmas cookies and other baked goods you can turn out. These make fabulous gifts for buddies and family ; even the kid's teachers. Simply add the cookies and some fruit and other treat to a tiny basket and finish it off with a bow. Goodie baskets make smashing gifts as they are handmade and this makes them more valued than a Yuletide gift purchased at the store.
Send a Christmas card or letter to loved ones
We mustn't forget that Yuletide is the season of goodwill and good cheer and it's vital to reach out to friends and family in the vacation season. While you may be too busy to keep in touch in the year Xmas is a great time to catch up and share your folks reports. We spend a little time making our own greetings cards for close friends and family. For out-of-town relatives we write up a Yuletide letter, packed full of news from the year gone by. The tiny ones can help by decorating the letters, perhaps including drawings and pictures. These letters are a way to share the significant things that have happened in your life.
Finding our what Santa brought
Naturally the activity that everyone is looking forward to most is the gifts on Xmas morning. The tiny ones sneak down on Christmas morning to see what Santa left for them in the night. Magically hiding the gifts the night before is just as much a memorable activities for the adults as seeing their small one's faces light up as they tear open the gifts on Xmas morning.
