Works Of Kindness Throughout The Holiday Season
"Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat, please put a penny in the old man's hat... "Remember that children's rhyme from your childhoold? I sure do.Christmas is a time for giving. To the poor, as well as to our own families.
Often we lose touch with that.The commercialisation of Xmas over the last twenty years or so has turned Xmas into a present-giving fever, particularly if you have children. And if you do not, the Xmas period is likely to are composed of lots of parties around the Xmas tree, regularly with Kris Kringle type Xmas gift giving, and often far too much alcohol.
Xmas stockings and Xmas decorations are too often overtaken by overindulgence in Xmas food, and the ubiquitous Xmas eggnog and other alcohol - plenty of it.
Is this a good thing? Well, I assume it depends to a point on your point of view of what Xmas customs are all about. Those among us who latch on to any excuse for a booze-up, the Xmas party period must be excellent. Hang up one or two Christmas ornaments in the workplace or the social club or wherever, and have a boozy Xmas party - it may be your most likely chance to start an office romance.
But I think many folks became somewhat jaded BTW Xmas is used as an excuse for Christmas parties beginning in Nov and running right through December to Yuletide Eve. Get togethers with your workmates is not such a terrible thing, of course - it's pleasant to socialize once in a while instead of being focused on work. But it is the excessiveness which many folks find moderately ott.
Many of our children don't have any notion of the true meaning of Xmas. To several, Xmas trees and Yuletide ornaments mean Santa and Xmas gifts - lots and a lot of them. Even those children who can tell you what Xmas is all about are likely to forget the actual meaning of Xmas when deluged with Christmas gifts.
Whatever occurred to the actual spirit of Christmas, when folks would cook 2 standard Xmas dinners - one for their own family, and one which they would take out and give to a less lucky family who perhaps lived just down the road?
Whatever occurred to the real spirit of Xmas, when children would scrupulously select and wrap up their loved but still in good shape Xmas gifts from last year, and take them to the local children's surgery, and essentially hand the Xmas gift to a sick child just to see the smile on their faces?
Nowadays folks are much more likely to give money to varied charities ( which is not such a bad thing ) than do acts of service, or essentially give hand picked gifts of food or toys. But money is much more impersonal.
So how about attempting to make a contribution this Xmas? Get out and give something personal - to somebody you can look in the eye when you are giving the Xmas food or Xmas gift - and say from within - "Merry Christmas".
