Examining How Christmas Cards Have Developed Throughout Time

The average person that sends Christmas cards will send approximately 50, which equates to billions being sent worldwide each year. The tradition is more popular than ever and the few weeks before Christmas help to sustain card makers throughout the rest of the year. This article examines how the tradition of giving Christmas cards has evolved since its inception.

Early cards

1843 saw the sending of the first commercial card; although some handmade cards may have been sent previously. The card was made for Sir Henry Cole by his printer friend John Calcott Horsley. The card was sent by Cole to people that he knew in both his personal and business life to wish them a Merry Christmas. The design of the card was somewhat controversial in that part of it depicted a small child attempting to drink from a wine glass. Cole had helped to introduce the Penny Post three years previously and the invention of Christmas cards proved a shrewd move.

Changing tastes

Many today would perhaps expect early Christmas cards to typically have contained religious themes. The reality is that many designs were aimed at reminding the recipient that spring was just around the corner; making flowers and animals a common theme. Themes involving winter scenes and religion did soon followed as America was introduced to the Christmas card thanks to printer Louis Prang.

Modern day options

Modern day christmas cards are now available in many different shapes and sizes, with comedy cards proving a big hit. Another area that is enjoying real growth is that of personalised Christmas cards. This way you are able to create your card design online and then easily place your order. The process of designing personalised cards can be fun and the end result is something that can be kept by friends and family.

 A Christmas Tail!

A Christmas Tail!

$14.5

PueDy is a friendly skunk with a magical tail. In this story he and his animal friends help Santa recover from an accident with his sleigh and save Christmas. He is happy fellow who loves to play with animal friends and with children. He doesn't have a very bad smell like most skunks do and has a special "gift" that enables him to talk to children and sometimes to grownups too. He can do many things other animals cannot. But, the most special thing of all about PueDy is - the magical power he has in his beautiful black and white striped tail. He can use his tail to do all sorts of things. He can shape it into a tool or use it as a shovel and he can even use it to help him fly. Helping others and having fun are the two things that PueDy likes to do most of all. This is the second book in a series of PueDy adventure stories. Each tale is associated with a special event, holiday, or festive occasion and has an educational theme. Each has a touch of spirited action and a positive message. The story endings are based on the productive results of fun, friendship and positive values. This tale begins on Christmas Eve morning. PueDy, his animal friends and the children from the village have decorated a Christmas tree in the forest with ornaments they have made. The animals and their parents will return later that night to wait for a visit from Santa on his way back to the North Pole. Santa leaves the extra food that the children put out for his reindeer as gifts for the animals in the forest. It is a special tradition they do every year. As PueDy is heading home he encounters Santa and the reindeer. They have crashed into a field and Santa's sleigh is badlydamaged. Using the magic in his tail PueDy and his friends are able to repair the sleigh in time to save Christmas for all. PueDy has done it again.
